Navigating Heel Spurs Pain
Heel pain first thing in the morning? You may be dealing with a heel spur—a small bony growth that develops where your heel bone meets the plantar fascia.
At Feet for Life Centers, our board-certified podiatrists provide advanced, non-surgical and surgical treatments that target the real source of your pain, not just the symptoms.
About Heel Spurs
What Is a Heel Spur?
A heel spur is a calcium deposit that builds up over time on the underside of your heel bone. It often forms in response to chronic strain or inflammation of the plantar fascia—the ligament that supports your foot arch.
Many people with heel spurs don’t feel pain at all. When pain is present, it’s usually caused by irritation or inflammation in the surrounding soft tissue, not the spur itself.
Common signs and symptoms:
- Sharp pain when taking your first steps in the morning
- Aching or tenderness in the bottom of the heel
- Pain after long periods of standing, walking, or running
- Swelling or warmth at the heel

Why Heel Spurs Develop
Heel spurs are your body’s way of protecting the heel bone from repetitive stress. Over time, tension from the plantar fascia or Achilles tendon can pull on the bone, leading to calcium buildup.
Contributing factors include:
- Flat feet or high arches
- Poorly cushioned or worn-out shoes
- Jobs that require long hours standing on hard surfaces
- Excess body weight
- Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
Preventing heel spurs often starts with supportive footwear, stretching, and early evaluation when pain first begins.
